Some destinations offer more than just a place to stay. They create a sense of connection, calm, and perspective that stays with you long after you’ve left.
Chiang Mai is one of those places.
During a recent stay, our CEO & Co-Founder Danielle experienced both the refined luxury of Anantara Chiang Mai Resort and one of the region’s most meaningful cultural experiences. What follows is her perspective; a thoughtful look at what makes this destination so impactful when done right.

Anantara Chiang Mai Resort
Location & Design
The hotel itself is beautiful, blending traditional Thai influences with a more modern, understated aesthetic. Set along the banks of the Mae Ping River, the location is ideal. Peaceful and calming, yet just minutes from the energy of the city, including easy walking access to the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar. It strikes that perfect balance between retreat and accessibility.
Service & Personal Touches
What stood out most was how personal the experience felt. The team genuinely connects with their guests in a way that feels warm and natural, rather than transactional.
Dining Experience
Dining was a highlight throughout our stay. The Bodhi Terrace was a standout for traditional Thai cuisine. Everything we tried was exceptional, with a wide variety of dishes that felt both authentic and beautifully executed. Breakfast was equally impressive, with a generous buffet complemented by a full à la carte menu. The riverside setting adds another layer to the experience, making even a simple morning meal feel special.
Pool & Amenities
The pool area is stunning, with large cabanas that comfortably accommodated our family of four, something that made a real difference for us. The pool team were consistently friendly, attentive, and gracious, creating a very relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
Spa Experience
The spa was another standout. The treatments were deeply relaxing and indulgent, and the thoughtful finishing touch of mango sticky rice in the relaxation area was such a lovely and memorable detail.
Suites & Thoughtful Details
Our suite was expansive, beautifully designed in a modern Thai style, and equipped with everything you could need. Small touches like Dyson hairdryers, as well as both slippers and flip flops, made it feel especially considered and comfortable. We also arrived on my birthday, and the welcome we received was incredibly thoughtful. The suite was beautifully set up with cake and candles, DIY mojitos, fresh fruit, chocolates, champagne, and a birthday message on the bed. It was such a special and personal touch, and truly set the tone for our stay. A heartfelt thank you to Pui, Director of Sales & Marketing, who went out of her way to make the visit feel so memorable. A special mention as well to Kevin at concierge, who was exceptional. He went above and beyond to assist with last-minute requests and activity arrangements, always with warmth, efficiency, and a genuine willingness to help.
Overall Impression
Overall, this is a property that feels both luxurious and authentic, offering a true sense of calm within a vibrant destination. It’s the perfect retreat after a day exploring Chiang Mai, and a place we would return to without hesitation.

Elephant Sanctuary Experience in Chiang Mai
Elephant sanctuaries in Northern Thailand are one of those experiences that can be incredibly meaningful…but only if you choose carefully.
There’s a lot of conversation, and rightly so, around the ethics of these experiences. Over the years, many elephant camps have simply rebranded themselves as “sanctuaries,” which can make it difficult to know what’s genuinely responsible and what isn’t. It really does require a bit of diligence. Doing your research ahead of time is key.
When done properly, though, this is a truly fascinating, bucket list experience.
It’s deeply inspiring to see the work that goes into rehabilitating and protecting these beautiful, gentle animals. Many have come from difficult pasts, and the care, patience, and commitment required to support them is something you can’t help but respect.
What to Look For in an Ethical Sanctuary
There are a few clear red flags to be aware of. You should never ride elephants. They shouldn’t be painting, playing sports, or performing tricks. And they should absolutely not be controlled with hooks or forced into any kind of staged behaviour. What you want to see instead is something much quieter and more natural. Elephants roaming freely, moving at their own pace, cared for by dedicated handlers who know them well. A genuine sanctuary will focus on education, sharing the individual stories of each elephant, where they came from, what they’ve experienced, and how they’re now being cared for.
Why Responsible Sanctuaries Matter
The reality is that many of these elephants cannot be released back into the wild due to the conditions they’ve endured earlier in life. That’s why legitimate sanctuaries are so important. They provide a safe, respectful environment where elephants can live out their lives as naturally as possible, with minimal human interference. Caring for elephants is incredibly costly, so in the absence of meaningful government funding, even the most ethical sanctuaries rely on tourism to sustain their work. The difference is that in a true sanctuary, the elephants’ wellbeing always comes first, and that’s something you feel immediately.
